Adsense Tidbits



Adsense Tidbits, gives you Tips, Concerns, and Changes happening within the Adsense Program. Periodically check back-this will help you to stay white-hat compliant within the Google Adsense program. This list will be added to periodically throughout the year.  I'll try to keep you abreast of the changes that Google Adsense is implementing or testing.

2012 Adsense Tidbits

  • Google is making some enhancements to the way in which their ads are being delivered to different devices. According to Google they are making their text ads smarter and will soon display them differently so they perform optimally depending on where users are viewing them from: computers, tablets, or smartphones. Depending upon the screens that the ads will appear on, they will need to adjust the number of ads per slot, as well as, increase the size of the ad so that it will make them more legible and noticeable.


2011 Adsense Tidbits

  • Public Service Ads to be retired. Check out the additional information on my website about the  Public Service Ads Information on my website.
  • Google is adding "+1" to Google Ads and in search results. Soon you they will being adding +1 that allows people to share your information on your website. For more information about the Google "+1" feature. Check out the following on their website: +1 to great web content
  • Google is updating their link ads and the landing pages to give them a new look and possibly a better performance boost.
  • Google Adsense has added the color script so that you can customize your ads, in the new interface. Check it out.

2010 Adsense Tidbits
  • New Adsense Interface - New Adsense Interface is being rolled out by Adsense.
  • Adsense category blocking - Adsense Category blocking allows you to prevent certain categories of ads from showing on your site. But be sure to check the impact of the categories and the ads that are showing on your site before eliminating them. Google gives you the percentage of ad impressions to clicks on these categories. You do not want to eliminate a category that is converting into clicks.
  • Adsense for search ads only. Two new features have been added. Publishers can now include AdSense for search ads on their pages and pair them with their own, homegrown search results. How? With a few lines of JavaScript to your page, you will be able to display AdSense for search ads above, beside, or below your own search results.

    Ajax for Adsense- If you have dynamic content, Ajax for Adsense can help you to utilize Adsense. With the use of Adsense content with Ajax, content ads will refresh whenever there's a context change- regardless of whether the page reloads or not.
  • New Beta testing for Brand Awareness- Adsense is testing ads that they hope will entice brand advertisers to publishers sites. They are statistically testing websites with above the fold ads. The ad needs to be fully visible above the fold, regardless of the browser, monitor, screen resolution.

2009 Adsense Tidbits

  • New Adsense Interface in beta - Adsense is rolling out a beta test to select publishers in multiple countries. The select languages will be in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Japanese.

    The new interface they will be testing includes:

    1. Detailed performance reports with views of daily stats in graphic formats
    2. Additional metrics such as the amount you've earned from various ad, targeting and bid types
    3. More control over your ads
    4. Streamlined Adsense interface to simplify tasks-such as making changes to several ad units simultaneously
    5. Added more relevant help on every page, a message inbox for tips, and alerts for account related notices
  • YouTube and Adsense Ads - Adsense is launching YouTube Promoted Video in Adsense ad units. You can see anything from movie trailers to product demos to really almost any kind of video on YouTube. These promoted videos to AdSense sites will enable content producersto broaden their reach, while providing you with another way to earn money. Currently this new launch is in English for US publishers only. But expect that to change in the future.
  • Mobile Phone Browsing - Adsense is launching a new feature that will allow webmasters to take advantage of high-end mobile phone browsing experience. Publishers will have the ability to run larger Adsense ads visible on high-end phone. A new JavaScript snippet is being introduced. This snippet of scriptingl anguage is to help reduce latency on high-end mobile phones, as well as allow publishers the ability to select additional ad unit sizes from common AdSense formats.
  • Competitive Ad Filter - Google Adsense has upgraded it competitive ad filter. Before the upgrade your url blocking would take up to an hour before the change would be seen. They have pared that down to 30 minutes. Your competitive ad filter has also been updated to hold 500 sites-more than double that it use to be.
  • Third-Party Network Ads be added-Third party Google certified network ads are being added to Adsense. The Ad networks will compete with Google Adwords advertisers for position on your website. Google Adsense allows publishers control of which Ad Networks can advertise on there sites. The ads that give the publisher the highest revenue stays. For more details go to Google Adsense Basics.  The Ad Networks will need to go through a certification process by Google.
  • Font Enhancement - Google Adsense is now offering a new feature-the ability to change the font size of your ad. You can now select small, medium, and large from Latin-based languages only. To change ad size for all ads you can find it under the "My Account" tab, where you will see a heading called: "Ad Display Preference". For ads that you currently have in place you will need to make changes within "Manage Ads".
  • Link Ads Enhancements - Google Adsense is tweaking this link ads to push up the revenue for both publisher and Advertiser. When some click on the link ad the viewer will also see an image ad. One nice feature is that they will never show the ugly Public Service Ads or the blank space when there are no image ads for the topic. (Inside Adsense 6/3/2009)
  • Beta Test on Category Filtering-Adsense is developing a much requested feature for publishers- category filtering. At this moment it is be offered to a few websites to test and tweak and determine if it is viable for all Adsense users. (Google's Inside Adsense)
  • Adsense to retire Video Ads-At the end of April Video Ads will be discontinued by Google. Advertising results have not proven to be successful. However, the video within the image/text and image selections of your ads will still be in place. So yes, Google Adsense is still accepting video from eligible Video publishers.
  • New Email notifications will be rolling out. What that means is: you'll soon have the option to receive specific messages like event invitations, information about webinars,and personalized account suggestions. You'll receive a one time page when you sign in to Google Adsense to sign up. If you change your mind about preferences you can go into your Account Settings, visit Contact Preferences to update your preferences.
  •  Adsense Interest-Based Ads - Google is putting adsense Interest-based ads into the beta stage. Interest-based ads is a new concept. Google is going to be using ads that they feel will pique the  interest of the individual-this will be based on past searches or searches made before reaching your site.
  • Adsense Font Changes - Adsense is now allowing you to tweak your ads with different font face selections. The selections are Verdana, Arial and Times. You can make these changes in "My Account" for over-all changes, or you can customize your ads within the Manage Ads section. Note: even if you change the overall font, it will not change the customized ad you selected in the Manage Ads Section.
  • Adsense for feeds-Adsense is currently moving feedburner accounts under Adsense for feeds. Adsense for feeds can be seen within Google Adsense. There you can click on the link and set up  Adsense within your feeds.




  • 2008 Adsense Tidbits

    Adsense Tidbits:

    • Adsense Competitive Ad Filter- The competitive Ad Filter helps to restrict contextually-targeted and placement-targeted ads from appearing on your pages. To find the url that you want to restrict, you can use the Adsense Prevew Tools or you can use the Ad Review Center. You will have to opt-in to this option within Google Adsense before using it. Remember: do not click on the url within the ad to determine the destination url for this is against Google Adsense Rules.
    • Adsense Ads- Experiment with colors that blend or complement your sites, using lighter borders or no borders at all. Experiment with colors, and if you find several colors that work well with your site-rotate them for variety to your viewers.
      New Adsense Analytics
      -Keep your eye open to new analytics features in Adsense. Learn where your Google ads are working the best on your site or blog.
    • Adwords Ads - New features are being added to the Adwords programs for its content network. They will include features such as: frequency capping, site performance, DoubleClick serving cookie.
    • Adsense Referrals- Adsense Referrals are being shelved by Adsense Google. They will discontinue the referrals by end of August. Time to remove your referral ads. Google Referrals are now under DoubleClick. You will have to be approved even if you have an adsense account. 
    • Adsense ads should not be placed directly under a title that implies that it is not an ad. For example: If you have a title that says-Business Opportunities-and you have an Google Ad underneath-that is a no-no. This type of title with the ad below implies that it is links that was supplied by the publisher and not Google. They advise using a different color for the ad titles or indenting the ad unit to help distinguish the ads from your own content.
    • Adsense ads should not be placed by a group of links that are identical in color and spacing.
    • Adsense New Terms and Conditions-Changes to Adsense rules and conditions are in preparation for future changes to products and services that are in different advertising mediums and formats
