Adsense Alternate Ads and Why My Ads Aren't Showing

What types of alternate ads will Google let me use, since the Pubic Service Ads are gone?  How do I maintain Adsense?  And most importantly, why are my Adsense Ads not showing? All are important questions that I hope to help answer for you.

Alternate Ads

With the demise of the Public Service Ads, you are left with the following available options:
  • Color-You can place a colored patch where the PSA would have normally been placed.  Most people choose to make the colored patch the same as the background of their website.
  • Image- You can use an image, the same size as the missing PSA ad. You will need to replace it with a fully defined URL in the Alternate Ad Box. An example of a fully defined ad according to Google is:

      http://www.mywebsite.com/logos/Logo_60wht.gif.

Again the image has to be the same dimensions as the ad it is to replace.
  • HTML Page- This is a little more involved solution, but it is very useful if you'd like to implement a clickable image as your alternate ad.  The HTML page you need to create will contain the information required to load your image and link it to any destination. When creating an HTML Page, Google suggests using an absolute URL. An absolute URL is an URL that includes the entire path of where the clickable image well be located. An example of an absolute URL is as follows:

    <a href="www.mywebsite.com" target="_top"><Img src="http://www.example.com/images/alt_aid_skys.jpg"></a>

  • Collapsing ad units - The collapsing ad unit allows you to hide the space where the ad would have been. This means your web page will not show a blank space or colored block, but instead, will collapse the ad unit where a possible PSA would have been normally.

For complete details for one of these alternate features click Google Alternate Ad Support for complete instructions.

Why are My Adsense Ads Not Showing?

Why  are my adsense ads not showing? Common question. When you ads are not showing, you will have to do a little investigative work to determine is there are any technical issues, or your content does not comply with Google rules, or if the Google algorithm hit your site. Let's first assume that your website is having some problems and Google didn't hit you with an algorithm change. This is what you need to look at.

1. First, and foremost make sure your Ads are around quality content, and that the content is relevant to the ads that are on your web page.

2. Make sure you have keywords that Google uses. (Use Google's keyword research tools).

3. Any objectionable content that does not comply with Google rules will affect your ads. Or whether your ads will show at all.

4. Recheck your Google code on your pages. If you have accidentally cut and paste only a partial section of the code on your web page you will have two problems. 1) No ad will show; 2) Web page won't be indexed. By the way this is an easy error to have happen.

5. Have you blocked to many of your competitors? If you did, that is why you may be getting the alternate ad.

6. Avoid titles like "Advertisements" above or below your ads. Why advertise that to the visitor that they are looking at an ad.

Google Algorithm Updates

Let's face facts, "Google Algorithm Updates" will always happen. Usually you'll see adjustments every 4 to 6 weeks. What is Google's algorithm searching for? The algorithm is constantly search to make sure all web pages are in compliance with their algorithm, thus, the rules of Google.

Do I, or you know what factors they are looking at or for on web pages or websites. No. But if you are hit by the algorithm, or believe you are hit by the algorithm you'll see a decrease in traffic and maybe page rank.

However, it may not be wise to jump to conclusions at the beginning. I would advise:

  • First, check all your Google Adsense scripts to make sure that the AdSense code is not broken. If the code is not complete, replace it with fresh code.
  • Check for broken links on your web pages. If you have broken pages on your web pages the spider may back out. This stops the spider from moving further into your web pages.
If everything looks okay than it time to do a search, to determine if Google has made a major change in their algorithm.

Why would you want to do that? Because it may help to to correct the problem that Google was addressing.
