IS A PREPAID CELL PHONE
RIGHT FOR YOU

Is a prepaid phone right for you? Maybe, if you prefer not being stuck in a 1 or 2-year cell phone contract, a prepaid cell phone may be a good option.

First, we need to answer the question-What's the difference between a prepaid phone plan and a monthly phone plan?"

With a prepaid phone plan you pay for the minutes upfront, with a monthly phone plan you pay for minutes after you use them. The prepaid phone is for the budget minded.

Is a Prepaid Phone For You

Prepaid phones are not for everyone. But for some, it helps them to get connected while staying within their budget. Here are some of the benefits:

  1. It offers a cell phone without going through credit checks or signing a 1 or 2 year contract
  2. Long-distance calls may be cheaper than a land-phone
  3. You are accessible to family, friends, and your business
  4. Great if you're not a regular cell phone user
  5. You want to use it for emergencies or when you travel.
  6. On a tight budget

Prepaid Cell Phone Features

Will you have some of the same features as a regular cell phone? Yes. In fact, you can get most, if not all the features for a prepaid cell phone that is offered for those who choose the monthly cell phone plan. Such as:
  • email capabilities
  • picture messaging
  • web browsing
  • text messaging
  • Bluetooth connectivity for communication headsets and music headphones
  • custom ringtones and more.

But remember, these additional features are not without expense. Thus, you have to be aware of the plan you are buying into, before handing out the money. Here are some examples of the expense of some of the services:
  1. The prepaid phone service typically cost more per minute than a regular cell phone. (10 cents per minute)
  2. The cost of text messaging can be: sending (10 cents) and receiving (5 cents)
  3. Picture taking (25 cents)
  4. Some services require you to use your minutes up within a certain period of time.
  5. Flat per minute rates. However be aware that they may charge you either: 1)a $1 access fee a day whether you use the phone or not; or 2) they charge a $1 access fee for the days you use the phone-even if you use it for 5 minutes-the $1 is tacked on.
My advice is simple, it's wise to compare rates.

Who Offers Prepaid Phones

Below you'll find some of the companies that offer prepaid phones, as well as, a taste of their available plans.

Tracfone - You can buy bundles of minutes which must be used within a set time limit of 90 to 365 days. You can buy bundles of minutes from the Tracfone web site from your home PC or directly from your phone's web browser.

Virgin Mobile - You pay only for the calling time you use. You can choose a plan that's based on just minutes (rates between 10 cents and 20 centers per minute or a monthly plan with no annual contract) Virgin mobile is powered by Sprint.

AT&T - At&T (pay-as-you-go GoPhone plans allows you to pay in advance for what you need. Also offers Rollover Balance feature that allows you to carry over your unused account balance when you purchase refill minutes before your balance expires. No long distance or roaming fees across AT&T national service area. For an additional fee you can get unlimited text messaging and web browsing.

T-Mobile
Pay by the day. 10 cents a minute with $1 daily charge for the days that you use the phone.

Verizon pre-paid -- Verizon prepaid (a joint venture with Vodafone) offers the INpulse plans. You can get rates as low as 2 cents per minute and 2 cents per text message. Sounds good but....there is a daily access charge with all plans, which can make the service exceedingly expensive, even though the daily fee is only charged on days you use the phone. So, if you're not planning on using the phone a lot, this may be a good option.

If you are an infrequent talker on a cell phone, a prepaid phone may be a good option for you. But as I said above, be sure to read the fine print, and know what you are getting before you commit.
