Malware -- these programs are not spyware, but they can cause a lot of damage. They are scripts that continue until your data is destroyed -- Trojans and Worms are example of that. (That is why it's important to have solid protection, like Norton, McAfee, etc. to protect your data and Internet experience).

Meta Tags -- tags to describe aspects of a web page.

Meta Tag Generator -- A tool that will output META tags based on the page.

Microblogging - Microblogging is publishing short message or updates that
are two to three sentences long. Microblog posts can be read on your desktop or mobile. Examples: Twitter, Facebook.

Mousetrapping -- The use of a browser by a site to keep a visitor captive.  Such as, deleting the "Back" button capability or by the use of pop-ups.

Niche Marketing -- A niche, is a service or product , that fills an unmet customer's need -- that is more of a specialty.

 

Outbound Links --  is an url that you have on your site that points to another website.

Payment Threshold -- The minimum payment that the affiliate must accumulate before payment. Be aware of the payment threshold.

Payout -- The amount of money you receive from participating in a program. (Commission)

Phishing -- An email scheme to obtain confidential information from the owner.

Pharming -- Scheme to obtain personal or private (usually financial related) information through domain spoofing. Pharming 'poisons' a DNS server by infusing false information into the DNS server, resulting in a user's request being redirected elsewhere. Your browser, however will show you are at the correct Web site. 

Podcasting --A Podcast is an audio file that is syndicated via an RSS feed, that you download and listen to with your computer or a portable device such as an iPod.

Publisher/Affiliate -- The person who is advertising the products or services of other companies to generate revenue.

Reports -- Some affiliate programs have built in tools that allow affiliates to generate a lot of reports-- track their earnings, identify trends, and improve their marketing.

Reserve -- Part of the affiliate's commission that is retained as a reserve for a period of time. 

Return Days -- Return days indicate the number of days after a visitor clicks on the affiliate link for which the affiliate will still receive commission if the customer/visitor returns.

Rotation -- Affiliates can choose to rotate the banners on their site, so that the visitor will not constantly see the same ad over and over again.

Sale % (Pay Per Sale) -- You are paid a percentage of the sale that you generate.  So, as an affiliate, if you sell a product that is offering 10% commission on a product that sells for $15.00, you will get $1.50.

Scraping -- The process of sending an electronic copying bot to take everything it sees, and creating unlimited number of instant documents.

Search Engine Optimization -- The process of choosing targeted keyword phases, and working to see that these keywords work well when promoting the site.

Site Targeting --  targeting to specific sites or groups of sites for advertising purposes.

Snoopware - Software that keeps track of user activity on the computer. Snoopware programs can record keystrokes and can take snapshots of the screen you are on.

Spam Traffic -- Hits you receive on your website, that has no relevance to your site.

Spiff -- Spiffs are additional bonuses you make on a per sale basis. A Spiff is figured by multiplying the number of units sold during the spiff period by the spiff amount. If you sell 10 units with a $50 spiff then you'll make $500 on top of your regular commissions for the same period.

Spim -
Spim is the spamming of your IM (Instant Messaging)  The spim usually contains a website that the spammer is trying to market.

Spimmer - An individual or organization that is responsible for sending the spim.

Spit - Though not currently prevalent-it is the transmissions of spam over VOIP or Internet telephony.

Splog -- Spam blogs, are blog sites which the author uses only for promoting affiliate websites. Purpose is to increase page rank, or use the blog as a link outlet to get new sites listed. The articles are consider spam, with no viable content.

Stop Words -- SEO Term -- meaning the word is so common that it is useless in the SEO process.  Examples: and, an, etc.

Storefront -- Are prefabricated pages that show products in a pleasing manner.

Sub-affiliate -- An affiliate referred to a program from another affiliate. For each sale generated by a sub-affiliate the parent affiliate gets a commission

Super Affiliate -- An individual (affiliate) that can generate a significant amount for an affiliate program.

Tagboards -- Blogging tool that allows your readers to interact as if in a forum.

Tagging -- Tags are keywords that acts like a subject or category. A keyword is used or organize a web page and or objects on the Internet.  An image of web page can have multiple tags. A  user can use these tags to do a search on similar web pages.

Text link -- Is a hot link that is not accompanied by a graphical image.

Title Tag -- HTML tag used to identify the text at the top of the Web page.

Tracking Method -- The method that is used to track leads, sales, click through, and or impressions, which is generated at the merchant's site.

Traffic -- The actual visitors to a web site.

Unique Visitor -- A real visitor to a site. The server usually records the IP address of the visitor.  If the visitor looked at 20 pages, it would only count as 1 visit.

Url -- "Uniform Resource Locator" -- used to specify the address of a website or webpage.

WhoIsThere -- This is a tool used by a merchant, so that they can follow who is still selling their programs, as well as, new affiliates that come on board.
