Create Your Own Ebook

Steps To Developing Your Ebook

They say the best way to make money online is by having your own ebook or product. I will go through some quick steps you need to consider when developing your own ebook, however, these steps are similar to creating an online product as well.

1.Identify your topic.
The best way to developing an ebook is around a skill or experience you are knowledgeable about. If you have a website, you can base the ebook around your niche topic. However, if push comes to shove, you can look for current trends through the Internet or newspaper. But remember, trends will only give your ebook a short shelf life on the Internet.

2. Writing Your Ebook Yourself or Do You Need Help?
If you have the experience and knowledge to create your own ebook, then you're half way to success. Now comes the actual writing.

You will need to type your ebook, using Notepad, Wordpad, Word or any software text program, before putting it into your PDF file. Be sure to format and proofread your ebook.

For those who do not want to write their own ebook, you can outsource the job. Once the ebook is written, you will need to test.

3. Test before releasing your ebook.
I know you just want to get the product out there and recoup your funds. However, you really don't want to release your ebook without testing. If you can, select a few people to read your ebook.

In exchange for the free read, ask them for their unbiased feedback-whether it's good or bad. This will help you to tweak your ebook before it hits the masses.

4. Testing Done, Time to Launch Ebook.
Your testing is done, but there are still some additional areas that you should follow-up on before going live. They are:

  • Is a payment processor set up? Does it work?
  • Is your web page SSL secure?
  • Did you speak with your hosting service to make sure they can handle any spike in traffic and load? Will you have to pay more for the service. They may cut your service if it spikes over your paid limit.

Choosing PDF or .exe Format

I would suggest that if you are going to create an ebook, use PDF. This is a widely used and accepted form of bringing an ebook to market, and everyone has or can download a PDF reader for free.

The .exe can have two major drawback-accessibility. 1) You can zip the file and have them download it. However, not everyone has, can or wants to buy a zip program. Why lose a sale when you don't have to? 2) When you start an EXE file-it is in essence an executable, which makes it a computer program. People downloading a file-have greater trust with a PDF file than with an EXE file, because the fear of a virus attached to a PDF is minimized.

PDF Software - What To Consider

There are some things you should consider when choosing your PDF software, whether you're planning on paying for it or thinking about getting a free version of a PDF software. The paid version is rather straightforward, however, you should be aware of some possible "Free" software flaws.

Free PDF Software

Free PDF software is great, you say. Yes and No. You have to be sure how they are getting a return on the free product they are giving you. Usually the free PDF software will have advertisements. The next question is where will the advertisements be displayed?

1. Will it be displayed in your PDF copy
2. Will it be displayed only to you when the software opens

If the advertisements are displayed within your PDF copy, look elsewhere. Why? Your creditability will take an immediate dive if they see advertisements that are not relevant to the topic you are discussing. And, it makes the finished product look unprofessional.

What Your PDF Software Needs To Include

No matter whether it is free software or you have to pay for it, these elements should be included in the PDF software:

1. Your document software-Make sure the PDF software includes the document software you are going to use to produce your ebook. Such as: Microsoft Office®, rich text format (.rtf), text (txt), image formats (if you're going to be using images)
2. Does it have security and encryption capabilities
3. What operating systems does it support XP, Windows 7, Vista, etc.
4. Can your computer support the PDF program

Creating an Ecover

Don't forget your ebook cover. Your ebook cover, can give your ebook a finished, professional look, and it's a good marketing tool. There are some free sites that allow you to create an ebook, but that is getting rather scarce and in most cases, the quality is lacking.

Putting Your Own Product On-line

After the testing, and you are getting sales, you will eventually want affiliates to help sell your digital product.  My suggestion: Before you put your ebook on line, be sure and know what the affiliate brokerage firms expect from you-if you're anticipating having affiliates sale your product. Here is a sampling of what you will need to get your product ready for an affiliate brokerage firm:
  1. You need a domain for your digital product. A subdomain is not accepted, if you are planning on using ClickBank.
  2. Your digital product should be in a format that allows customers to download your product
  3. You will need a pitch page and a thank you page (sorry, no free domain)
  4. If you want to attract affiliates-you should have an affiliates page.
The suggestions above will help give you an idea of what you need to begin thinking about when putting your product online. Next, you need an affiliate brokerage firm to help you find affiliates.

Where to Place Your Digital Product to Sell?

Below is a list of where you can begin selling your digital product.

  • ClickBank  -- It's free to sign up. Customers can pay with Visa, Mastercard, online checks, PayPal and more.  There is a one time set-up fee of $49.95 to activate your account. They take a small percentage of your sale for a service fee.
  • PayLoadz -- It's free to sign up, and they guide you through the process of putting your product on their site.  You will need a standard business account through PayPal (it's free to set up) -- and you can begin accepting PayPal payments or credit card payments through the PayPal system.
  • PayPal-You can set up your payment processing through PayPal. Your customers can pay using PayPal or credit card. They take a small percentage of your sale for a service fee.

Do You Want Affiliates To Sell Your Product?

Do you want affiliates to sell your product? If you're planning on using PayLoadz or ClickBank, then yes, you probably are looking at affiliates to help you to promote your ebook. But this, opens another issue-affiliate spammers.

Affiliate spammers can cause you to have your IP to be listed in SBL as spam support services (SMTP, HTTP, DNS). If you that becomes the case, your program will meet a early demise.

Here are some possible suggestions to help you with affiliate spammers.

  1. Verify each affiliate's identity and check to see that they don't have a "spammy" history.
  2. Have within your Affiliate Policy spam rules which prohibits spam and an indication that the affiliate would be terminated promptly for spam with no payment nor refund of deposit. Harsh, as this rule may seem, it can save your program.
  3. Delay commission checks by 30 to 60 days
  4. Don't accept HTTP referrals from domains in SURBL or URIBL blocklists, nor from IPs in SBL or XBL.
  5. Keep track of all your affiliates' urls.
  6. If you have to terminate an affiliate you can point their url to a "404".

Note: It's always wise to have a affiliate policy of what the "affiliate" can do, and cannot do. This is helpful for the experienced affiliate, but an educating process for those new to affiliate marketing.
