Different Types of Websites to Build

What Type of  Website to Build?

What type of website do you want to build. Is it a niche website that is offering something that is not currently in the mainstream, or maybe it's a static website to promote your service, or maybe it's a mobile website to reach a specific audience. As you can imagine, each is unique. I'll give you an idea of the different types of websites, as well as,  teach you a little about what to expect out of a web hosting service.

STATIC WEBSITE

A static website is your traditional website that you will see when you enter an "established" company. It is basically an online brochure, you can see this type of website with a local search. For example, take a look at a dentist or doctor's website. It will list the services they offer, as well as, how you can get to their business. Not very exciting, but it is usually targeted to the local market in their area.

NICHE WEBSITE

A niche website is based around a service, a product or idea that is not being supplied or serviced. The niche is usually a sub-market of a larger market for a given service or product.

If you happen upon an idea that will fit a niche market, you will need to do some of the following:

  • Research-To determine who your target market is, and if there is an interest in this sub-service or sub-product.
  • What opportunities are there for generating income from your niche website (If that is your purpose).
  • Will the information you give the visitors be beneficial. Remember, on the Internet, people will not buy unless it will benefit them in some way.

The niche content website, also falls into this category. The difference is content. It will discuss a very small subject area and use different advertising methods (Adsense, affiliate sales) to  bring in some revenue.

AUTHORITY SITE

What is an authority site? An authority site consists of these main characteristics.

  1. Quality, relevant content
  2. Been online for some time (3+ years)
  3. Lots of hard work and planning
  4. A trusted site
  5. Many different layers of pages, usually with subdomains to differentiate between the specific categories.

An authority website takes a long time to build. But...if that is the direction you want to go, then the planning should start when you are beginning to layout your website design. If you do it well, you'll have the search engines, traffic and advertisers coming to you.

An example of a authority site is, About.com. If you go into the site, you'll notice that the different categories are divided by subdomains

E-COMMERCE

An E-commerce website can be a brick and mortar business, with an online presence as well. Or it can be a start-up business run out of a person's home, with products stored in their garage or in a rented warehouse. An e-commerce site sole purpose is to sell merchandise to it's target market.

Some of the typical elements of an e-commerce site are:

1. All products should have photos and descriptions. With accessible links so that individuals can look at the product.
2. Easy Navigation
3. E-commerce shopping cart. Shopping cart software can either be included in the web hosting plan or can cost you up to $500.
4. Payment Gateway - The Payment Gateway is a service that will help you to process your payment methods.
5. Shipping-If you have physical products to ship you will have to estimate your shipping charges and determine whether you will only ship within the states or Internationally.
6. 800-number, contact number, or email contact. If customers have no way of contacting you, in the Internet world you just put up a red flag that tell any would-be visitor, "It's time to leave!".

I've just skimmed over the basics of what you need to be thinking about when constructing an e-commerce website. Though it may seem simple, don't be fooled-it's not. This website venture can be time consuming, if prices and products change often.

MINI SITE

A mini site can be a website that gives information about one specific product or service. It can have various multimedia content, such as narrated introduction, visuals or other forms of animation to attract or immerse the visitor in the experience.

You see this type of website with digital products, such as PDF eBooks, interactive web videos, audio, and podcasts.

Basic elements of a Mini Site Page may include:

1. Graphic header, title, subtitle
2. Sales content
3. Testimonials
4. Order form
5. P.S. section
6. The author or seller of the product signature

BLOG

A blog is another type of website. A blog has been coming into it's own over the years. It's beginning was with online personal journaling, but it has grown into a viable "website" type. With WordPress you can create a domain, and host it through a web hosting service. However, I would advice, reading up on the mechanics of WordPress before jumping in with both feet.

With a blog, you will need to constantly be adding new content. Not only will your readers be hungry for content, but also the search engines. As to how often you should update your blog, it depends upon what your readers will bear. It could be hourly, daily, or weekly. I've never seen anyone stretch it to a monthly entry, but if your readers will accept that little of input, go for it.

MOBILE WEBSITE

More and more, Internet marketers are beginning to recognize the importance of mobile phone users. Why? More and more are using this mobile phone to connect to the Internet. And the ready market is around 2.4 million mobile phone users and growing. Which means, anyone who wants to get a bigger share of the Internet market may want to create a mobile website.

What you need to know when building a mobile website:

1. Tables will not look right on mobile phones
2. CSS must be used to ensure compatibility
3. Your site should be coded according to the local in which you want to market. For instance, XHTML Basic and XHTML MP are used in North America and Europe; and  CHTML is used in Japan.
4. You may need to incorporate more radio buttons and lists that the phone user can choose from because, as many of you already know, it is difficult to enter text in mobile web sites.
5. Images should be jped or gif format.
6. Your web page cannot be more than 20 kilobytes to fit properly.
7. Once you have constructed your website be sure to validate and test. You want to make sure that what you have created can be seen on a mobile phone.

Commercial Web Hosting- What should your minimum requirement be?

You will find that web hosting is very competitive, which is a great plus for the individual buying the hosting service. As you begin your search for a web hosting service you will quickly notice that they come in many price ranges, with different bells and whistles to meet everyone's needs. But there are some minimum requirements that you should consider.

  1. Does it offer customer service 24/7?
  2. Enough bandwidth for increased traffic
  3. Email Accounts -- At least 3
  4. Does it supply you with traffic stats?
  5. Does the hosting packages provide room for your site to grow?
  6. Is the price reasonable?
  7. Does the company have a good record of server uptime?
  8. Does it offer a variety of website templates (for those will no HTML experience).
  9. Are the support people fast and helpful and is the support reachable.
  10. For those  not experienced with HTML do they offer a WYSIWYG program to get you up and running quickly.
  11. PHP- php capabilities gives you some server side scripting capabilities.
  12. Crontabs- As your business grows, cron capabilities will come in handy. Cron capabilites allows you to schedule procedures automatically on your website. For example: Updating your sitemap on a weekly basis.
  13. SSH Access- This gives you direct access to your pages from the server. If you have CGI scripts this makes the job easier for testing.
  14. FTP Access - Though you may decide to use SiteBuilder program that the company may offer, remember your skill level or needs will change. For instance, you may decide to use WordPress as your platform, and decide to pay someone else to do the upgrades as they come available. If that is the case, they will need FTP access to your site.
  15. .htaccess is needed if you customize your error pages or need to protect your site.
  16. SSL - This is a secure server for a shopping cart if you have an ecommerce site.
  17. Autoresponders- I'm not talking about the full blown capabilities of a program like AWeber. This type of autoresponder allows you to only send a preset message to a customer.

Website Hosting and Cost

Most people are broad-sided by the cost, or the fact that the web hosting service is not giving them what they expected.  Never assume they are going to offer you anything for free. Or, naively assume that certain services are available just because you seen it available on another web hosting service.

Always match your needs to the web host capabilities. What do I mean? You need to ask yourself some of the following questions:
  1. Do I just need a simple HTML website that will only make simple demands on the web hosting service.
  2. Do I want a more interactive site, with forums, and discussion groups. If you do, expect a possible large bursts of traffic in your future.

As to the "perfect hosting service", in my opinion, none are perfect. That is why, I state that you should carefully do your research, know what your needs are before committing. And one last thought, in this business, the more expensive web hosting service does not always equate to quality.

Website Hosting Examples

As you will see, web hosting services can be competitive in price and what they offer the individual looking for a website, domain or other services related to web design and marketing. It is wise to take your time and look at what each company has or does not have to offer, as well as, how long they have been in business before buying into a service. Why? It's a hassle to have to change web hosting services when you are trying to build an online business.

Lunarpages
They offer the following plans: Starter, Basic, Business, Windows, VPS, and Quicksite. This is a good site to look over. Each hosting service is geared for different situations.

For example, take a look at the starter web hosting service which is more geared for a blogger, a personal web site, or any other small web-based projects you may be managing. Then compare the starter to  that of a business web hosting program,  that is for established business owners and individuals with more complex sites.

GoDaddy.com Hosting Plans from $1.99 per month! Now with Unlimited Bandwidth!
GoDaddy is a full service web hosting company. They offers web hosting, domain service, domain auctions and more for people wanting either a simple web presence online to businesses with all the bells and whistles.

Wordpress & Go Daddy Hosting Go Daddy offers Wordpress sites to fit your needs. There is one thing that is nice about their plans is the different payment options. It starts with a 3 month plan to a 36 month plan. Sometimes you want to try a niche market to see if it will fly. However, many do not tip their toe into an online presence because of a yearly commitment. Thus, a 3 month commitment is ideal to test the waters before committing to a yearly or even a 36 month hosting plan.

Now that you have determined the type and the web hosting service that will house your website, it's time to create your online business name which is your domain name. The domain name is important, because it is basically like the name you see on a building for a brick and mortar business, with the only difference being, your business is in a virtual environment.
