Building A Website-
4 Elements To Consider
By Vickie J. Scanlon
Though content is always first when building a website, how it is presented to the visitor
is also very important. Thus, when you are building your website you should keep these four things in
the top of your list of concern:
-
navigation
- speed
- layout
- color
Color
Let's begin with color, specifically background color. A dark background makes it very difficult for people to read your content-and it's hard on
the eyes. I've come to a site with dark content, and usually leave immediately.
I remember asking one newbie why she put her website in dark blue. She responded
that she liked the color. I agreed with her that the color, in and of it self looked
great for a dress or even a part of dress pants, but not a website. She felt that I had insulted her
creation. Though she may have felt insulted by my comment at first, she soon realized the change in background
color helped to improve her traffic.
This all translates as such: Consistency of color, and appropriateness of color for the type of website
is key to setting the mood of the site. For instance, you do not want a medicine yellow, to
promote a gaming site.
Website Colors and Impact on Buyers
Colors can have a negative or a positive impact on a visitor that enters your site. Just check out the following colors
and what they can convey.
Green – Money, wealth, prosperity, hope, growth, freshness.
Orange – Health and vitality, autumn, courage, confidence.
Yellow – Light, purity, organization, happiness.
Purple – Dignity, sophistication, creativity.
Brown – Credibility, stability, comfort and strength.
Black – Authority, classy, serious, power, elegance.
White – Purity, goodness, and spirituality. Note: In western cultures white represents
marriage, but in Eastern cultures it can represent death.
Grey – Security, reliability-it's a neutral color.
Red - bold, excitement.
Layout
Your layout should be clean and clear and not cluttered with everything imaginable. You should not overload the senses
with many divergent thoughts as well. It makes it close to impossible to follow. And trust me, people won't. They
will just click away.
Navigation
Your navigation should easily allow your visitors to move around your site, without them having to struggle to find the information they want.
Always be pro-active with links, if there are any broken links, it will cause not only frustration for your
visitors but for the search engines as well. Also, invest some time and create a site map for visitor and search engine.
Speed
Though the Internet has come a long way, not everyone can have or afford to have broadband or a cable connection. That means,
those nice graphics you have on your website may be slow to load for the viewer. If it is slow to load, the visitor
may click away in frustration.
As you can see, color, layout, navigation and speed are your customer support tools. It should give your visitors quick
access to what they are looking for, which is definitely what you want your website needs to accomplish.
