Email Marketing Revisited

By Vickie J. Scanlon

Email Marketing has been around for some time and in the beginning, it was the traditional way of reaching your target market/established customers. But the threat of fines or being called a spammer, made some people rethink email marketing in a different light. So, how is email marketing used now? And why is it still used?

Why Email Marketing Is Still Used

Let's begin with the "why" email marketing is still used.

Email Marketing is used because:

1. Cost is free or minimal (Minimal, if you pay the monthly cost of an autoresponder)
2. easy to use
3. You can personalize the email
4. It can help with upsells
5. It's fast way to contact people
5. And if you offer an double opt-in newsletter subscription
you know that your email will be read
Conventional Method of Marketing with Emails

Some companies are using a conventional means of marketing by way of the Internet. Instead of "hitting the phones", they are letting the typing fingers do the work. It's "cold calling" Internet style. Here's how it works.

The lead generator does all the Internet work. She/he will research different websites, seeking only those sites that they feel match with the product they are offering. If they find a match, they will send a professional email stating their interest in contacting the webmaster in regards to their product.

In addition, they will give you a link to look at, and say, that they have a great business opportunity that can help you and them succeed online. It's a mutual partnership they say.
They don't/won't push too hard, but ask that you look at the link and if you have any interest in the product, to please contact them my email.

If the webmaster responds that he/she is interested, the email is forwarded to a sales representative to close the deal by way of a phone call. If the webmaster is not interested, they politely end the correspondence.

Email Opt-In List

The other method of using email marketing is by your own opt-in list. You can create an opt-in list if you have a newsletter, or you have a data capture for those people that want to be notified if a product is going to become available on your site that they are interested in. This is the correct way to gain creditability and trust.

If you choose to just have a list without an "opt-in" be prepared for: 1) some angry people claiming they did not authorize the use of their email; 2) being called a spammer; 3) your email being deleted.

This translates into one simple fact: The "opt-in" option is a necessity because it give you permission to send them information. So let's look at the rules.

Email Ethics

If you are going to partake in email marketing, there is one important rule to follow:

1. Never send an unsolicited email. Why? It may elicit a mass "unsubscribe" notice from your list and may tarnish your reputation. Your word on the internet, is exactly that, your word. So, keep in mind, to allows show your professional side if you are addressing your target market by email.

2. Always have a way in which an individual can unsubscribe from your newsletter. I know, you want to grow your list and not shrink it. But nor do you want to have an individual feel "trapped". What will happen to your email-it will be sent to the spam folder. This is where the "opt-in" option is essential-with the preferred method of a double-opt-in option being used. Why?

If the people agree to the opt-in option, you know that you have permission to send them correspondence.

As you can see, there is more than one way that you can use email marketing. But ethics, should always be part of the mix.
