Reasons To Buy An LCD Monitor

By Vickie J. Scanlon

Are you still using a CRT monitor, because well, it's paid for and it still works? That was my reasoning. "And besides, I'm happy with it," I told myself as I squinted at the screen and lightly rubbed my sore eyes. "I guess I need a good reason to buy a LCD monitor, especially since my CRT is working just find? So let's fine out what the LCD can do for you.

LCD Hype

You've heard all the promotions to the LCD monitor, right. Is it all hype, or is there truth to what is being said. If you are a Johnny Come Lately, with a wait and see attitude, then you will be surprised to know that LCD monitors do offer greater image quality.

For the money conscious, let's first say that many people have abandoned their CRT monitors and moved to the LCD PC monitor, which helps to lower the prices. But it doesn't answer why you should buy a LCD monitor.

Why are People getting LCD Monitors

The first important reason, is of course, it's important to your health. Most CRT's are smaller and harder on the eyes. With the LCD, images are easier to see and text is easier to read. And if you're an entertainment enthusiast or love video games, than the LCD monitor should be your choice. Why?

According to Professor Alan Hedge of Cornell University article
"Ergonomics Considerations of LCD versus CRT Displays
Dept. Design & Environmental Analysis, Cornell University" - there are many reasons to consider an LCD. To summarize:

LCD monitor:

1) Is free from flickers, which can reduce headaches and eyestrain, and the
geometric image distortions at the screen's edge are eliminated from the LCD.
2) offers uniform screen brightness and reduces glare
3) LCD saves space on your desktop
4) LCD takes less energy to run
5) LCD offers better screen privacy because they can not be viewed from the side angles.
6) LCD offer less heat emissions
7) LCD monitor come in sizes to compliment anyone's viewing pleasure

CRT monitor:

1) Is not free from flickers
2) CRT offers geometric image distortions at the screen's edge
3) CRT is bulky and takes up space
4) Because of the size and the intermittent flickering it can produce far more eye-strain. Of course, this is not good, especially if you have to work on a computer for long periods. Let's just say, you could expect to have bottle caps for glasses, or if you don't wear glasses, anticipate the possibility.
5) CRT takes more money to run
6) Heat emissions are greater

So, in the long run, are you saving money with your old CRT? Probably not, if you include your health. But I believe many people have realized that not only does the LCD quench the "I want the LCD monitor because it's cool", but maybe some are seeing the many benefits it does give you, from initial cost of running the monitor to it's many health benefits.

So if you're not ready to hand over the dough yet, don't worry, prices are coming down steadily. And soon, the CRT will be history and the LCD will become the standard. Though the CRT did it's job, we all must part with the old and soon step into the 21st century. Are you ready? I know I sure am.
