SEO Doing It Yourself
by Vickie J. Scanlon
Wanting to do SEO yourself because money is tight? If you're thinking about it, the phase of "doing it yourself" takes on
new meaning and new challenges, if you are new to SEO. Such words as learning curve and continued reading
gives new meaning to the word "challenge".
Thus said, yes it is a challenge, but you can do it. If your plans are to do SEO of your website yourself, here are some quick tips
to get you started. Let's begin by giving you a quick lesson on
some SEO terms.
SEO Terms
The following terms:
Keywords, search engines and meta tags are the terms you should become familiar
with in your search engine optimization process.
Keywords- are words that are specific to the content, and that which should draw the search engines and traffic to your site.
So, the more specific the keywords or keyword phases are the better results you will have.
Meta tags- meta tags are found between the "Head" tags within your HTML code. These tags help the
search engine to identify the content of the web page it is crawling. Some of the different meta tags that you should know are:
- Meta Tag Description-Should contain keywords specific to the content
- Meta tag Title- Keywords should be in the title
- Meta tag keywords- Some search engines look at the keywords tags, others do not.
Search Engines - Are spiders that crawl your site for valuable content.
They apply their own special algorithms into the mix of things to determine the value of the content.
Quick SEO Tips
1. The meta tags should identify your web page. I want to emphasize this a bit. The most common mistake that I have found new people commit is using the same meta description and meta title on
every one of their web pages-even if they are different in content. Again, each web page meta tags should emphasize what is on the page.
2. Keywords within your content should emphasize the web page content. Keywords should be placed within your page title, meta tags, and URL. As to the url, I have found, through trial and many errors that the URL should relate as specific as possible to the web page.
3. Links pointing back to your site is important. But the catch is which sites are linking to you. Why? The quality of the site pointing back to your site helps to the search engines to measure your linking popularity.
Once you feel you have done your best at optimizing your site,
then it is time to submit your website to the different search
engines.
Other Things to Consider in your SEO Process
Though page rank has some importance, because you do want your site to be seen, you also much look at several other things:
1. Are your web pages converting
2. Are you getting traffic
If your web pages are not converting, and thus, you're
not getting traffic-page rank means nothing.
SEO Consultant-Should you.
If you are too skiddish about doing your own SEO, you can enlist the services of a SEO
Consultant. But, if you do decide to go with an SEO expert remember several things:
1. The cost of an SEO consultant is expensive. So it is very
wise that you are allowed to look at their portfolio. And to contact
some of his/her clients before going forward.
2. Make sure that they utilize white hat tactics in their optimization and marketing. If not, you will be rudely surprised by Google and the other search
engines (And the surprise will not be in your favor).
This is a quick basic look at SEO. Be aware that there is much more to SEO. You see, the SEO process is never
done. You may think you have SEO solved and your pages are doing well, and then, suddenly your pages bottom out.
What happened? Probably Google, Yahoo and the other search engines have changed their algorithms to keep a degree of honesty
among webmasters.
