Web Log Analyze Your Data

By Vickie J. Scanlon

Your web log can be a great source of information. You can learn a lot about your website performance and your visitors, be it human or robots/spiders. It's all useful.

In most cases, your web host provider provides you with log analysis software. Let's take a look at 3 of the most common.

Web Log Analysis Software

There are many log analysis software out there. The most common are the three below, with the Webalizer log analysis software being the most commonly used by web host providers.

Urchin - Is one of the more popular solutions for website traffic analysis, especially with ISPs and web hosting. The Urchin Software Corp was acquired by Google in 4/2005. Thus, another avenue to looking at another set of statistical analysis is through your Google Analytics-if you utilized Adsense.

Webalizer - This application is one of the most commonly used web server administration tools used. They include hits, visits, referrers, visitor countries, and amount of data downloaded.

Analog - Is a free web log analysis software program, that is comparable to Webalizer or AWStats. However, it does not have a graphic interface, but uses bar graphs and text to analyze your data. But the data supplied is complete.

Understanding Web Log Terminology

Hit - each HTTP requested submitted by a browser is called a hit.
However, even when the search engines makes a request, that is also counted.

Page- When a page is listed it signifies that the HTTP request has been successful

Visitor - Means simply that it is an actual person visiting your site.

Host - Host are identified by their IP address or domain name. It tells you the host of the visitor

User Agent-Another name for web browser

Web Log-And Information It Provides

But, of what value can your web log be to you, the webmaster? Your Web Log can give you a better picture of what is happening to your website, as well as, who is coming to your website. By looking at your web log you'll see some of the following:

1. Robots that view
2. HTTP referrer -- HTTP referrers are important to look at. It can determine what spiders and other websites are doing on your site. For more information: check out the article on Referrer Spam
3. Search Engines that visit
4. HTTP errors
5. Key words and keyword phases used to get to your website through the search engines.

Website Analysis

When viewing your stats you should pay close attention to three sets of stats that will show your website overall progress. They are:

1) Hits
2) Visitors
3) Page Views

Hits-Hits are important, except they can be somewhat misleading. Why? Your server will track every hit-be it a picture or when a page loads from your server onto a visitor's browser.

Page Views/Visitors-The Page Views/Visitors give you a good indication of how many people are coming to your site, what pages they are loading, and thus, time spent on your site. You know your website is working properly if you are getting at least two pages viewed by a visitor.

I personally look at the page views. If people are reading, even skimming, then you know the quality of your content is interesting enough for visitors to further surf the additional pages.

Note: To determine the stickiness of your content: Page Views divided by number of Visitors.

Keywords

Your log statistics will also give you an indications of what keywords are being used by your visitors. Keyword stats helps you to: 1) work at improving the web pages you want visitors to frequent; and 2) which pages visitors are currently frequenting on your site.
