Affiliate Marketing Expectations
By Vickie J. Scanlon
Is affiliate marketing for you? Many people want a presence online, but many do not fully realize that
an online business is just like a brick and mortar business. Translated, you have to work at it.
There are many avenues to having a business online, and many, I included, decided to create an affiliate business.
So what is an affiliate business and what do you really need to know before putting your toes into the arena of affiliate marketing.
What is Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate Marketing allows you to sell other companies products for a commission. The commission can be any percentage of the total sale price,
depending upon the price and the type of product. Affiliate Marketing does have the potential to give you a good income. However, if you are new to the affiliate marketing business, realize that your income will only grow as your skill level improves. What do you need to learn?
Affiliate Marketing-What Do You Need To Know
I would advice that you have an idea of what your niche will be and develop your affiliate programs around your niche. Here is
a good plan of attack.
1. Decide on your niche
2. Develop a business plan - which includes your goals, method in which you will use to achieve your goals
3. How much money and time will you need to reach those goals.
Realize, too that if you are just starting out your website will be new to the Internet. That means, that some of the affiliate programs that you apply to may reject you for their program. Do
not get discouraged, as your time online continues and the content on your site grows, you will
soon find companies requesting that you sell their product on your site,
and then it will be your turn to either accept or reject their offer.
Expectations and your Affiliate Marketing Business
As I said above, affiliate marketing has the potential to help you make a nice income online. However, do not expect to
make this "nice income" overnight. Yes, some affiliate marketers claim
to have the Midas touch and have made a fortune rather quickly (So they
say). But in most cases, people will only grow their income as their skill level
and knowledge grows within the area of affiliate marketing. And trust me, there is a lot to learn.
What will be your biggest investment
Your biggest investment will be your time. Since you are learning your craft you will have to
learn the following "how" questions before seeing some
improvement.
1. How to research the products that you want to use for your niche. If
you are wanting products to sell on your site, along with your content,
you will need to research the availability of products that will
compliment your website.
2. How to research your niche. Is it a niche that will attract customers?
If the niche will not attract customers, or you cannot create an
interest, then the niche is not viable. Now, this is the hard
part.
3. How do you get traffic to your website. This is a big one. Do not expect to create a website and people or the search engines will magically find you.
It won't happen. You will need to advertise. I most cases, people
beginning affiliate marketing do not have much money in their pockets.
So, how can you advertise? The best way, though a lot of work, is
through SEO and keywords.
4. How to increase your traffic and increase your website rankings.
Increasing traffic to your site, be it a website or blog will take time.
First you have to get through the six month Google Sandbox. Many say
that the "Google Sandbox" does not exist. But by the method of
their algorithm is does. The Google Sandbox is the time in which the
search engines and people are just beginning to realize that you are online. And the only way to keep them on your site is through quality,
targeted content.
5. How to develop a list. Many affiliate marketers create a following.
If you create a following, you can send out emails to your followers.
However, you also have to learn the right way to sending an email to
your list. Why? You do not want to be labeled as a spammer, because it
can place you within a "blacklist" on servers. What does that
mean? It means your emails will not get through and you will need to pay a
fine to get off the blacklist.
6. How to write articles. You will need to learn to write articles for content on your site, as well as, for article marketing. Article marketing is a free avenue to getting backlinks and traffic. (If you do not include your labor for writing the article.)
7. How to start an email campaign once you have a opted-in list.
8. How to develop a Pay-Per-Click campaign. If you have money to spend
you can look into using Google Adwords as a quick way to draw traffic.
Many people have begun advertising with Adwords to get their business up
and running quickly. However, if you don't have a clue what Adwords is,
it's best to avoid it, and search out some reading material. Why? You can
lose a lot of money in a very short period of time, without any positive
results to show for your efforts.
9. How to develop a quality landing page for the products you want to sell.
As you can see, there is a lot to learn. But it doesn't mean you cannot learn. If you are patient, have a niche that you are passionate about, have a willingness to learn on a continuing basis, and have the tenacity to continue with all the ups and downs of a true business, than an affiliate business is a good option.
However, if you think you will get rich quick with affiliate marketing within a
month's time with no knowledge or experience under your belt, your unrealistic expectations will be met with disillusionment, disappointment and ultimately failure.
