Different Payment Methods of Affiliate Programs

By Vickie J. Scanlon

Affiliate Marketing can be rather overwhelming at first. If you are wanting a presence online you need a website, and the best draw for advertisers is content, quality content.

But not all content will mesh with affiliate marketing products. Thus, if you want to get into affiliate marketing, make sure the niche you choose have some products or services available within your niche.

Overall, affiliate marketing offers a quick way to get onto the Internet. BUt it doesn't mean you'll quickly be making a whole bunch of money. Affiliate Marketing is a business, thus, like any business, hard work, ingenuity, internal fortitude to continue  and continually learning your trade is essential. For many, that squashes the dream of making money quickly. And if anyone tell you that you will make a whole bunch of money in a short period of time without working for it, you should walk away from it.

So what types of affiliate payment methods are available to you, the publisher? Below are some of the most common.

CPA (Cost-Per-Action Advertising)

CPA is sometimes called "cost per acquisition". With CPA the advertiser pays for each specified action, whether it is a purchase (cost per sale), and subscribing to a subscription or form (cost per lead). The action, of course, is determined by the advertiser. As you can imagine each offers a different return on the dollar. But sometimes, a company will pay for a lead, a free trial and then for the purchase. So, in essence you can make money in one of three ways with that company.

When would a CPA-based advertising campaign make sense for an advertiser?

1. Testing an affiliate program
2. Limited advertising budget
3. Help in determining slow sales or lack of response problems from your current advertising programs.

CPC programs

Cost-per-click advertising allows business to pay only for the targeted leads they receive. Under the cost-per-click the advertiser is protected. How? You fix the high and low that you will pay for each click. What is the best known CPC program-Google Adwords.

CPM Programs

Cost Per Impression programs will give you income usually based on a cost per 1000 impressions. The ad server will differentiate between a legitimate view, while eliminating reload, internal user actions and other actions that the company serving the ad online and the advertiser agrees upon.

PPC programs

Pay-Per-Call is a relatively new promotional method in which the phone is utilized. You (the publisher) will run phone promotions online and offline for advertisers. The advertisers will track the phone calls through track-able toll-free numbers. With the PPC programs, the advertiser is giving consumers the option to call over clicking. You, the publisher, can generate a commission in several different ways: 1) Get paid for driving calls; 2) Get paid for delivering qualified leads and sales.

Because of the high rate of click fraud, many feel that this new method of advertising may be a better solution to connect the consumer to the advertiser. I've seen some companies experimenting. And, I'm seen some companies use the "phone" to
eliminate the "Click" sale, which, of course, can hurt the publisher who has put the link on their site.

As you can see, there is more to affiliate marketing, then just putting a link on your website and letting it run for people to click on. That is only the first step, the next step is getting people to your site, to look at your content and to click on the link to generate money from the website. Sounds easy, but it's not. This, is where the hard work will come in and a strong sense of purpose to keep you going during the peaks and valleys.

If you're willing to learn by doing, follow the rules and harden yourself against the valleys of the business, take a closer look at affiliate marketing.
