Writing An Article

By Vickie J. Scanlon

You've decided to take the plunge and write your first article. You may feel intimidated by the task, but don't be.

Here's an easy way to get started with writing an article.

1. Choose your title and have at least one keyword in your title. It's important that your title contains the keyword you want to use because it is this specific word that you are hoping that the visitors will use to do a search, or the search engines to zero in on for better ranking.

2. It is wise to write in short sentences and short paragraphs because you don't want to intimidate readers with reading long passages of text. Why? You can answer this by asking yourself, “how do I read online? If you think about it in that manner you will quickly realize that most people will skim the article, only stopping on areas within the content that solves their problem or raises their curiosity.

Thus, break up your thoughts around subtitles, so as to lead the reader through the whole article. A subtitle, gives you a second chance to say, "Hey wait. Did you know this or this"?

3. Keep on topic and make sure that the subtopics (subtitles) are relevant to the main topic. If it isn't, take it out. Why? An article is just that, an article and not a comprehensive thesis. If you find you are moving on to another topic, you should put it aside and make another article out of the topic. (This is a great thing to do, because eventually all suffer from occasional writer's block.

4. After writing your article, it's wise to proofread your work. Too many errors will turn a reader and an article directory publisher away from your work.

Now that you have your article ready to go, it's time to send your article out to the article directories for webmasters and/or ezine editors to pick up your copy. If you're just trying article marketing out on a trial basis, it's wise to do a manual submission.

If it is the first time that you have submitted an article to a directory you will have to set up your user-id and password before beginning to get your article online.

Next, you'll have to copy and paste your article into their (article directory’s) site editor. You may be saying, "Hm-m-m, this could take some time. Yes, it does take time - maybe five to 10 minutes for each directory, if you're comfortable with the mechanics of copying and pasting, as well as, using some of the simple code editors on the different sites.

But it's worth it. With articles, you will see your rewards just not days down the road, but maybe years. Granted you're not going to hit a home-run with every article you write, but every article that you write will give your web page or website the exposure you want. But there is good news, if you do decide to use article marketing as one of your methods of marketing you can always use either an online article submission service or a stand-alone.
